Model takes the road less traveled

I’ll admit it, I tend to be pretty negative when it comes to reporting about models in the fashion industry, but it’s only because I assume they fit the stereotype. However, last night while I was watching Nightline, I came across a story about a model fighting the standards.

Crystal Renn is a size 12 model who has been featured in Vogue six times. As this article states, Vogue is fashion’s bible (and I couldn’t have said it any better myself). Those of us familiar with this beacon of beauty and pinnacle of the fashion world, know that the magazine mostly portrays skinny models.

So, it’s extremely refreshing to have a model such as Crystal Renn featured in its pages. However, Renn’s model days weren’t always so simplistic and successful. Nightline reports that the model was asked to lose ten inches off her hips when she first started as a 14-year-old in the industry.

Renn is 5-feet, 9-inches and she says that at her worst, she weighed a mere 95 pounds.

Now, here’s the good part. By 16, Crystal Renn had lost a total of 85 pounds, her hair was falling out and her skin was turning grey. She finally got a modeling agent, but she couldn’t book a magazine cover.

When Renn realized there were two roads in front of her, she decided to put her life first and give in to food temptations.

And that’s when she finally achieved her dream of becoming a successful model.

Watch Crystal Renn’s story and be sure to pick up her new book, Hungry.
